Georgia Avenue Development — Year in Review

As we close out 2010 and head into 2011, it’s a good time to step back and review all the development — large and small — that has impacted the Park View community over the past 12 months.

Starting at the north end of Georgia Avenue, there were three developments directly across the border in Petworth of note. Sala Thai and Subway opened in the Park Place building on June 3rd and September 28th respectively. DDOT also installed a Capital Bikeshare station on the northeast corner of New Hampshire Ave. and Rock Creek Church Road on September 20th.

Crossing into Park View proper, one of the more exciting additions to the area is the CVS that opened on the southwest corner of New Hampshire and Georgia Avenues on July 25th.

Just to the south of the CVS, the Blue Banana had a soft opening on December 21st and is the strips latest addition. This was preceded by the opening of Top Spanish Restaurant at 3541 Georgia Avenue, which opened on September 10th.

Also celebrating its ribbon cutting on September 10th was the Ward One Senior Wellness Center located on the southeast corner of Georgia and Newton. The Center has yet to open as a fully functional center.

Moving along, several blocks to the south, is Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine, which opened in early October. Ma Ma’s is located at 3118 Georgia Avenue. A little lower down, on the southeast corner of Georgia and Irving, the 77 Market opened in early July in the old National Guard space. This was directly across from one of the biggest changes to hit lower Georgia Avenue this year … the complete demolition of the 37-year-old Bruce-Monroe school. The school was razed and an interim park was created by the end of July on the 3 acre site.

Lastly, at the extreme southern end of the community, is the development at 2901 Georgia Avenue (corner of Hobart) by developer Art Linde, which is still under construction.

So, what’s in store for 2011?

There are still three major projects scheduled for Park View that have yet to break ground. Again, starting from the north, is “The Avenue” scheduled for the former Central Union Mission site on the southwest corner of Newton and Georgia Avenue. This project is considered the first phase of a completely redeveloped Park Morton which is located between Park Road and Lamont, and between Georgia and Warder.

The most recently announced project is Neighborhood Development Company’s (NDC) “The Vue” to be located on the southeast corner of Morton and Georgia Avenue. The third project, also by NDC, is “The Heights,” which will be located on the southwest corner of Lamont and Georgia. The Heights is currently on track to break ground in the first quarter of 2011.

In looking back at 2010 and forward to 2011, lower Georgia Avenue is definitely beginning to change.
